Awesome show, especially Porch at the end but I cant help thinking
Ed's voice is getting worse every time I hear him. Everything seems so
strained. Is it just me?

I dunno... I thought the show was weird, like PJ going through the
motions, half asleep, compared to the LA shows before and after. The
audience looked dead...

As for Ed's voice, it was not too good this tour... That's why I can't
listen to The End... it just kills me to see him sing that, and then go
smoke more cigarettes on stage. My mother has been suffering for years
the effects of 50 years of smoking, even though she quit 15 years ago.
The damage is probably done to his voice, but you'd think he'd want to
live to see his daughters grow up. Hell, it's probably only 6 or 7 more
years before his oldest starts smoking, because kids do what they see
their parents do.

I think he will never be successful if he keeps trying to quit, to 'give
them up'; I can imagine he doesn't deny himself anything he wants, even
cigarettes... But if he *wants* sobriety (freedom from addiction) badly
enough, he won't be able to deny himself that. It's all state of mind...

I haven't seen the ACL show yet but am not expecting much. I was in Austin
the night of the show and we thought about going but decided against it
because we figured it would be that kind of show. (Plus it had been raining
for several days so the lawn was rumoroed to be all mud).

Hard to quit when you're on the road drinking alcohol, smoking weed,
whatever, because those things and certain foods make nicotine cravings
worse. The best way to quit is to get away from the temptations of the
road and start an excercise routine. Cigarettes lose their appeal you're
heart is pounding from excercise.

Have you never seen Eddie in concert? He is working hard up there for 2
1/2 hours... and takes ciggie breaks in between... I don't think it's
lack of exercise, because you have to be in pretty good shape to execute
those backwards yoga move thingies he does on the microphone stand, and
to climb up the stacks ... :)

And I think he won't be successful UNLESS he quits while on the road. I
hear he's tried several times, but slips back into it while on the road.
My sisters quit via this program which allowed you to smoke any time
you wanted... except for 10 minutes after you get into the car, get a
cup of coffee, etc. You broke the hardest habits first, while still
smoking, then slowly increased the times until you just didn't have any
time to smoke. It was a good program. I suggest Eddie smoke any time
during the show EXCEPT during Porch and Evenflow... :)

But better yet, he should announce at the start of next tour that he is
quitting and have the fans pledge $1 for each day he goes without a
cigarette, to be donated to charity. Do it publicly and in front of
fans, who will give him tons of support.

All of what you said is probably very true. His voice ain't what it
once was, but it still kicks the shit out of mine, is all I have to
say about that.

On the audience...and on PJ...to have a show taped for the band must
be like being non-porn stars, but having your performance in bed taped
for financial considerations, even if you're not wild about the idea.
Kinda hard to get into it. I just think the band probably feels more
relaxed without cameramen flying around taping every move and
potential mistake. And the audience...humidity challenged, long wait,
and cameramen. It would make me self-conscious to be there, not to
mention somewhat distracted by the taping. It seems like a small
place with most people not sure what their best side is--or if there
is one! :)

At any rate, I'm pretty sure that PJ's best *shows* will always be the
ones not intended for a national audience all at once.

And all of that said, I didn't get to see them at all this tour, so I
was very pleased to see what I saw. I'm glad the show aired and that
I got a little dose of reaquainting. It was fun. Despite the years,
the distance in miles and the distance in time, they still seem like
people you can admire for their talent and dedication to music and to
bringing others some happiness from it in various ways. And, in
Stone's case, I can also admire him for his ceaseless product
placement of band shirts. It made me smile. They're still
themselves.

Yes and no... I think that was part of it, but they film every single
show (albeit by their own people) and they certainly didn't seem
self-conscious while they were being professionally filmed for the Italy
DVD... To me, it was because the audience was dead. Wonder how you got
tickets for that filming? So much of their energy on stage comes from
the audience, and there was no energy coming from that audience. That
being said, they put on a hell of a good performance even when they are
"going through the motions"... It's just that in every show I saw this
past tour, they seemed to be having so much fun, and Stoney was throwing
his hair around like a crazy person, and they just seemed so different!

Yeah, I wonder how he managed to snag one of the few shirts actually
sold by Target? Each Target had less than 10 of these karma offerings
from the reports I heard... but don't get me started on that again!
Hell, I might even wear mine at the next show on one arm, since they
only had medium and large and that's about all of me that will fit in
one... :)

I thought it was great even though the sound sucked, there were like
audio surges, maybe my tv acting up? ACL announced back in September
or so that the band wanted the studio audience to be wounded warriors,
but then I heard Lance Armstrong made it in for the taping??

Ah, I haven't missed it yet. It airs here in St. Louis Friday,
November 27th at 10pm on 9.1 (the HD channel)

One thing I like about Over The Air (OTA) tv going digital are the
stations getting multiple channels.

PBS has 4 here. Plus anytime I see a concert show on PBS 9.1 (HD)
it's just incredible, so I'm looking forward to seeing PJ in HD!

"going through the motions"... It's just that in every show I saw this
past tour, they seemed to be having so much fun, and Stoney was throwing
his hair around like a crazy person, and they just seemed so different!

They're still
themselves.
--Jett
Christyne
Yes, there were the wounded warriors, but they showed a friend of mine
rocking out several times (he seemed to be the only one)... so I know
some fans got in.

11PM...at least on my PBS.
*****************************************
All of what you said is probably very true. His voice ain't what it
once was, but it still kicks the shit out of mine, is all I have to
say about that.
Good point, but he is more and more resorting to singalongs when he
knows he can't make the notes... :(
Post by Jett K
On the audience...and on PJ...to have a show taped for the band must
be like being non-porn stars, but having your performance in bed taped
for financial considerations, even if you're not wild about the idea.
Kinda hard to get into it. I just think the band probably feels more
relaxed without cameramen flying around taping every move and
potential mistake. And the audience...humidity challenged, long wait,
and cameramen. It would make me self-conscious to be there, not to
mention somewhat distracted by the taping. It seems like a small
place with most people not sure what their best side is--or if there
is one! :)
That

If you're talking about Ed, at least he still has a hairline! :) All
of these fabulous things that happen to us "at a certain age." Sucks
hairballs, but you know, what can you do? The best thing, imho, is to
age gracefully. And, it seems like Ed is doing just that.

Si.....I noticed his forehead during the interview after the PBS show.
I think he's heading down the Neil Young patched hair look.

I dunno, as much as I am opposed to mortal men getting plugs or doing
comb-overs or other methods to hide their baldness, I think it was you
who said that Ed's hair is the sixth member of the band... I would
definitely forgive plugs in his case.... it would be not so much vanity
as it would be part of his performance... ;)

But whatever he chooses to do with his hair, super-short, salesman,
mohawk or receding, we will still love him.

Met EV on night #1 in LA on 09-31-09. He sounded great! He asked my
friend for a set list for an upcoming show, it ended up being night #4
in LA. My friend got an email from EV after the Austin taping and he
said the Texas air had worked his throat and that he had been to the
Dr. His voice was healing and in fine form for nights LA#3 and LA#4.
When EV sings songs you helped pick the order of, man o man, you ain't
believen it! When they played ALONE...Oooo...

Cool story! Thanks for sharing. You and your friend did well!

Texas air, Boston air, Philly air... couldn't possibly be the smoking
making his throat super sensitive to non-optimal conditions. Sounds
like the typical excuses and denial of an addict... ;)

Interesting that the LA smog seemed to be the best conditions... Maybe
he can move there when his voice sounds like Tom Waits...

I noticed it seemed like he thought of a singalong at one point, but
then thought better of it--probably because he figured there might be
10 people singing! It seemed like that kind of audience.

They were stunning--very literally in Ed's case--on the Italy DVD, but
maybe they got comfortable with the crew on a multiple date and venue
deal. I do wonder where they did get a large chunk of the audience.
They seemed like "window shoppers," or something. You know, like they
weren't really PJ fans, but they got this opportunity to check them
out, and so they did.

What a disappointment. I felt bad for Ed because his voice was
obviously shot. Then, ACL has their usual crappy sound mix which made
them sound like a one guitar band the whole time. Just unfortunate.

I bet it's not easy to pull off a show like that in the middle of a
tour. It's a letdown from what you've been doing every night.

I have optimum (cablevision) and for some unknown reason the local
public television station this is airing on is not on my list of
stations. It's not like I have just the broadcas basic channels. I'm
so annoyed with how they control the channels I get access to. I
remember when tv was free!!!

Don't you know that PBS is a liberal station? 10 to 1, your cable
company is owned by republicans.
