Just a short little story...

It's been a while so take it easy on me.

My wife and I, you may remember that I got married this past summer,
are in the final stages of buying a house. We found a great place,
got a great deal, and have great parents who are helping out to make
sure it happens. I will have to say that the home buying experience
is probably one of the worst things I've ever gone through in my
life. I guess it doesn't compare to losing my grandfather this past
year, or finding out one of X's was screwing my best friend...but it's
close. I won't bore you with details, although that's where the fun
stuff is, but we signed a contract on this house almost 45 days ago,
got preapproved for the loan almost 30 days ago, and ever since then
we have been undergoing an inquisition that makes me feel like I have
broken a law or something.

The thing that gets me the most is that the bank never asks for what
they actually want. They say, "we need proof of 'X'". So I provide
it. Then after 2 or 3 days they say, "well 'X' looks good but we
really need "Y'". So I growl and provide it. Then they say, "well,
"Y" isn't really what we want it has a word on it we don't like, can
you get us a "Y" that doesn't use that word? Also we need "Z" now
too, yeah didn't think we would but we need it."

To me at this point the scary part is that the contract I signed on
the house expires this week. The homeowners, who never even had a bid
on the house in a year and a half before mine suddenly have 3 or 4,
some of which are for more money than my contract is for. So if I
can't get this house bought by the end of this week, I may have to
start the whole process over.

So friends out there in Pearl Jam fandom land, say a prayer, cross
your fingers, light a candle, rub a budda, wish on a star...whatever
it is you do, and hope this works out for me.

Yeah, home buying can be rough, especially when you are buying a used
home, and having to deal with the owners and going back and forth
trying to finalize everything. We bought our house new, and while it
was a bit hectic and nerve-wracking, I don't think it compares to
trying to purchase an existing home. Good luck!

Tell me about it... I've been trying to buy a house since last February,
had a house in escrow for almost 3 months, but it fell through because
the first and second mortgage holders wouldn't agree to settle (short
sale - house was worth half what the 2 loans on it were for)...

Now I'm trying again on another house, and since I'm self-employed, I am
really getting the inquisition too. I too, have to close by the end of
the week... But usually, they will extend it rather than go through the
process all over again with someone new.

The housing market is really picking up in areas, as investors sense the
bottom of the correction and are starting to bid houses up again. If a
house is a short sale, people just bid on it for the hell of it, because
it takes a month or two to hear back from the bank. By then, the
highest bidder has walked, so they go to the next one, and another month
passes. Finally, they get to you... If a house isn't a short sale, at
least in Oceanside/Vista where I am looking (the only affordable place
along the coast of California), they get 30 bids in the first day and
won't show it anymore.

I am putting energy out there for both of us!

I will put out the positive vibes for both of us also. Good luck to
you.

I can only imagine what this process would be like if you didn't have
excellent credit.

Good luck on this! Start over, if you need to. It could be a very
good step, financially. I know that buying and selling used homes has
been one of the few smart things we've ever done in terms of
investments that have really paid off.
