I thought it was funny that while talking about my beloved West
Virginia University Mountaineers, and there game last night we had a
player who broke a huge run for a touchdown and the ESPN guy said,
"Noell Devine says,'I got some if you need it'."

Just thought I'd share. I sort of made an promise to my self that I
would post here more often in an attempt revitalize this group.

Great. Don't get discouraged if few reply for a while. Once people see
there are conversations going on, they'll slowly come back. I promise
not to argue politics with idiots... :)

It's not that I think poltics doesn't have its place here, it does,
but it seemed to dominate the conversation for awhile and once the
instigator left no one else was left to carry on a conversation.
That, of course is just my perspective.

On topic though...it is pretty amazing how Backspacer is everywhere.
I hear different songs from it during football broadcasts all the
time, I finally saw that Target commercial (still only saw it once),
now sportscenter is quoting it. It would be kind of funny of that
phrase catches on.

I heard The Fixer on the radio station playing at the dentist the
other day. What was weird is that I was reading an article about U2 in
Rolling Stone and in the article Bono mentions The Fixer.

Did the commercial actually make you cry, or were you being a bit over
the top? Do you sit there and curse it when it comes on tv? I'll
never know why people are so upset over this.

Because, PJ always stood for integrity and always hated the commercial
aspects. I've been to shows where Ed has thrown a fit because there was
an advertising banner or something. I always admired them for not
having sponsors for their tours. And they've made fun of people trying
to get them to make commercials. It's a bit hypocritical, and to me,
it's a sellout, using their image to sell TVs in Target ads... yuck. I
just never thought they'd do it. I'm over it.

1. They are promoting Backspacer. They aren't promoting anything for
Target. While they're are the Target logos in the commercial, they
aren't specifically selling anything but their album.
2. Since it's only through Target, they've cut out Wal-Mart, Best
Buy, and other regional big box stores. I'd say going with one big
store as opposed to 3+ is actually better. Plus it still is sold in
independent stores.
3. Barring the international distribution deal with Universal (not
sure if I'm right on that), they aren't dealing with Sony, Geffen,
Columbia, Virgin, etc. So once again they are cutting out more big
companies.

So in summary, they are actually lessening their "selling out" than in
previous years.

That's not true. The only reason Target is paying them more than any
other distributor would, is that they are making a commercial for
Target. There is no way to disguise that. Also, they allowed Target to
use their image to sell TVs in their weekly ad.

Sure, without the download. How's that working out for the
independents? Who here bought the record from an independent? In
Seattle, I spoke with Easy Street people, and bought the vinyl from
them, but they are pissed.

Selling out is when you promote someone other than yourself for money.
Using big companies to sell your own product is not selling out to me.
Selling TVs for Target IS selling out, even if you are *also* selling
your own product.

Just because the commercial only has a Target logo at the end, doesn't
mean it's not a Target commercial. Advertising suits are just getting
very creative in finding ways to get artists to make commercials these days.

That being said, I'm over it... it's done, they crossed that line, there
is no going back, they might as well get a sponsor so they can play
smaller venues or play arenas and lower ticket prices so young people
can go see them live.

As long as they keep putting out the music and playing shows, I really
don't care. I only responded because you didn't understand *why* people
were upset.

Who cares. It was cool when I was 16 that my favorite band went to
court over ticketmaster and didnt do videos and pissed on
commercialism and sponsors and all that other bs. Im 30 now, i got
more important things to worry about than how my favorite band sells
their albums. As you said, as long as they keep making music and
playing live thats all i care about.

Having said that, if I see them on american idol or something then
we're gonna have some problems!

********************************************
Well, I don't watch TV, so I have no idea about the televised
commercials. In print advertising, PJ was selling something other
than Pearl Jam. Yeah. I awoke to my husband telling me he'd left the
Target ad out for me so I could see my "band hawking some TVs." They
may like to think they're just selling an album, but Target likes to
think they're selling mp3 players, tvs, and Rock Band. In fact,
they're doing both, although not ad nauseum. And again, for the
record, I don't care what they're selling, so long as I get something
I like for a reasonable price out of the deal.

I don't know if Pearl Jam is selling out, selling in or selling
around. Sluts. They appear to be trying to sell more than usual. They
are a business. They need to sell things. It is too bad that Pearl
Jam does not sell medium loft pillows of reasonable density and
superior quality. I need one of those, and although Target sold me a
1/2 polyester 1/2 memory foam pillow that beat the sofa cushion-like
ISO Cool side sleeper, it's still far from ideal. Come on, PJ.
Simmons (not Gene) is going out of business. Step up to the plate.

Pearl Jam sold me two things, the cd and the shirt. It's a nice
shirt. And poor kids get free food as an upshot. And speaking of
shirts, the place to be when PJ puts out stuff to sell is in a place
where there aren't loads of fans. Like here. I think all 10 of us
went out and bought our shirts and cds and albums day 1. There are
still plenty of all of those things left in the display near my house.
Instead of attending the PJ show in SD this weekend, I am going to
march on the state capitol (literally) because of my burgeoning lack
of capital. In addition to cutting our salaries and raising our
health care costs dramatically, it is now being proposed that we be
involuntarily furloughed without pay...and probably be soundly beaten
for not working on the days without pay when we return. Mama, don't
let your babies grow up to be teachers. They won't be able to afford
Pearl Jam concerts if you do. :)
