Songs I've recently rediscovered

I usually stick to my tried and true songs from pearl jam, keeping
them in constant rotation. However, with the release of Backspacer,
and talking about PJ on the Red Mosquito boards, I've dug deeper into
the albums and have come out with new found appreciations for songs I
don't listen to often, and discovering songs that I never really gave
a shot to when they first popped up.

Garden/Deep - I love these songs, but they haven't gotten a lot of
playtime with me. But I dug them out and have been loving them for a
few weeks now. I love the guitar intro to Garden.

Rats - I like this one too, but doesn't get a lot of play. Love the
outro.

Hail, Hail - I don't know why I didn't have this on my USB thumbdrive
for my car. It's amazing and I guess I just forgot about it!

Mankind - loving this song more. I like the fact they mixed it up and
have Stone singing. The chorus is fun.

Push Me, Pull Me - Someone quoted a line from this song..."I'm like
an opening band for the sun". I thought that sounded cool, and never
really paid attention to the lyrics in this song (or the song for that
matter). It's a lot of fun and goofy too.

Sad - When I first purchased Lost Dogs, I heard the guitar beginning
but the first moments of singing did nothing for me, and I skipped
it. In the RM groups a lot of people were putting it on their
"alternate binuaral tracklisting", so I went back to it. This is an
amazing song! I love it. I don't know how this didn't make it on the
album. I guess it didn't mesh well with the others.

Anyone else have a similar reawakening?

Sad is in my top 10, amazing song. The only reason I can think of why
it didnt make Binaural is the similar theme to Light Years, maybe they
didnt want 2 songs about losing a loved one on the same album. When he
sings "hes searching for escaaaaaaaaape" and it leads right into
Mike's solo is a goosebump moment for me every time.

In My Tree is a song that was never 1 of my favorites, but I always
see PJ fans raving about it so i gave it another listen and its
definitely a great song. The version on the live at the garden dvd is
my favorite.

This first leaked when I was driving home to the Bay Area from Phoenix
(or maybe Vegas), and I played those 4 leaked songs over and over on the
12 hour drive...

I think it just didn't fit with the album... but it's a good song, and
it's always fun to see Stoney sing.

Masterpiece... this is the kind of stuff I'd like to see on an Eddie
solo album, pushing the boundaries and totally original.

Lots of PJ songs don't grab me at first, and I remember thinking on
first listen that Sleight of Hand was either going to be the best or
worst song on the album... but I skipped it for a long, long time, then
I heard it live... the words are amazing, yet another empathetic story
from Ed, like Small Town, which captures to the tee the feelings of said
character, when he couldn't possibly know firsthand what those kind of
lives are like...

Tremor Christ was another I always skipped, then it hit me like a brick!
I went back and listened after people were raving about it. I am so
fortunate to have gotten to listen to it twice this tour.

I'm skipping a lot of songs on the new album, but Johnny Guitar is
growing on me, since they played it live almost every night this tour.

Great tunes, especially Deep, which has always resonated with me...
well... deeply.

I still don't like this song. Maybe I never will. I've always thought
it to be the weakest track on vs.

I have been listening to this in heavy rotation for the last couple of
weeks. A lot of people see this as a "throwaway" song, but I don't see
it that way at all. I find it to be lovely. At Philly 1, I was
thinking to myself how awesome it would be if they finally played this
again live. Was both thrilled and disappointed to see that it popped
up at Philly 2 (which I wasn't at). I cannot wait for the bootleg!

This song is ridiculously good. Honestly, I think they left it off
because it was just too damn catchy, and I know they were trying to
get away from that. In my opinion, this should have been the lead
single off of Binaural, no question. They could play this at every
show and I'd be pretty damned pleased

Yes.

Porch. I know everyone loves this song, but I never really cared for
it until around 2003 or so. The whole thing just seemed rather
pointless to me for long time, but then one day it all clicked and
I've never looked back.

Light Years. Even back when Binaural first came out and I thought it
was the greatest album ever in life, and so on and so on, I never
cared much for Light Years. It was just sort of "there." Then, only a
month or two ago, I was listening to Binaural (my own version that I
put together, with some outtakes swapped in for some of the album
tracks) and Light Years came on and it was as if a door in my mind was
suddenly forced open. I was blown away by the song, and couldn't
believe I had gone so long without realizing how perfect it is.

Inside Job. I always really, really liked this song, but my
appreciation for it has gone up dramatically over the last couple of
months. I listen to it nearly every day at this point. I think it's
one of the best tunes the band has done. Period. If I were a musician,
and I had a band, I would cover this song. I'd close every show with
it. It would be my Rockin' In The Free World.

This song is really, really good when Stoney gets into it, and he and
Mike play off each other... the essence of Pearl Jam...

I cried the first time I heard this song... a masterpiece, imo. Plus,
it came out while I was in Scotland, and my grandmother was ailing and I
just hoped she would hang on until I returned home (she did, and I got
to say goodbye). Before going home, I toured Europe with PJ and heard
this song, and the beauty of the lines:

With heavy breath,... awakened regrets...
Back pages and days alone that could have been spent,
Together... but we were... miles apart
Every inch between us becomes light years now...

The thought that once she died, we'd be light years apart just killed me...

And then the following lines:

No need to be void,... or save up on life...
You got to spend it all.....

These became the motto of my life...

Just don't like this one... the beginning is incredibly beautiful, but
then it falls apart, and just turns me off.

Great topic by the way.

someone spoke about Sad...I remember listening to Lost Dogs and
thinking...why didn't some of these songs make on their respective
albums. Sad, in particular, is such a great song.

Yes, some of these b-sides and unreleased songs are amazing. They
should have just released lost dogs and a double disc studio album!

After Austin City Limits, "Inside Job" has been moving up my list.
Never really bothered with it before, maybe it's because the studio
version doesn't "breathe" like the live version.

Last night I listened to Inside Job 3 times in a row. Crazy!

I'll preface by saying I didn't go to ACL, just saw the PBS special.
But from what I saw, it looked very cool. And I've never really
noticed before, but do the members of the band do a lot of backing
vocals during the tour? It seemed like everyone was at a mic doing
backing vocals on some songs, especially the choir part in "do the
evolution", which I thought was awesome.

Yes, they all sing backup... Matt has taken over a lot of backup vocals
since joining.
