Discussion:
New songs I'd like to hear...

After a few weeks of listening to Backspacer, I have come to the
conclusion that I really like it. I like the no frills, no over
thinking tone of this album. They, for the most part, seemed to get
outta the way and screw around with the songs.

Having said that, "Alive" just came on my radio, and in some ways it
is hard to imagine that hte band that wrote Backspacer ever wrote
Alive. I'm pretty sure that I am meaning that as a compliment too.
Their songwriting is so diverse that there is almost somethign for
everyone throughout their catalog.

Now then, it is no secret that "Alive" holds a special place in my
heart. So maybe it is just fanboyism run amuck or a rose colored
"wayback machine" but I'd live to hear a new song in the mold of
"Alive." I'm not talking lyrically, I'm talking about a blusey song,
that has a great, unique guitar riff that builds and climaxes into a
long guitar solo outro.

Lyrically, it can be about anything. As long as it is Pearl Jam I'll
at least find it interesting to figure out the lyrics and what the
point is. One thing Pearl Jam has mostly steered away from is
timelessness. Their stuff has always had a pretty timely and current
feel, which is one thing I dig about them.

So there ya go, a "whishlist" so to speak...I'm sure some people in
here ae going...ugh another Alive...no f'n way. That's fine...what
kind of song would you like to hear?

I want some anthems. The ones that make people get out of their seats
and pump their fists. Everyone knows the words and sings along.

Yes it is. And I love Amongst the Waves!. I'm just selfish and want
more :)

But can you name the last anthem they had since Amongst the Waves? I
can't think of anything that would qualify on S/T, Riot Act, Binaural
or No Code

Yield: Given to Fly
Vitalogy: Not For You? Betterman?

Yield has In Hiding, which to me is the song on Yield that most
deserves the term "Anthem."

Binaural: Light Years almost makes it there, but it's just a little
too laid back.

Riot Act: People will make an argument that Love Boat Captain is an
anthem, but I think that this way lies madness. Frankly, there's
really nothing on Riot Act that fits into that mold, although I am not
listing that as a bad thing.

Avocado: The closest they come on this record to an anthem is Inside
Job, although it never quite makes it. Somehow, they manage to echo a
classic PJ sound on this album without resorting to the tricks that
always worked best for them. Whether this works to the albums
advantage or detriment is up to interpretation I suppose.

IMO, Do The Evolution was the last anthem. People still go nuts to
that and I reckon it’s stood the test of time.
Personally, at the moment I can’t get enough of unthought known from
Backspacer, but yeah it’s not an anthem for people to jump out of
their seats

Agreed. This song is a masterpiece, and to me, the words are killer,
and the structure of the song is like a wave, it ebbs and flows, rises
and falls...

I'm getting the feeling that this song is about someone with
Alzheimer's.. You know, nothing left, nothing left of the memories, or
*thought* knowns, but just the unthought knowns, the connection to
nature. It's a really lovely way to portray such a victim, as I always
thought of Alzheimer's patients being lost and unhappy, but this song
makes it seem like they are in a happy place...

Any other thoughts on the words?

everyone throughout their catalog.

Amongst the Waves is such an anthem, no?
That song seems pretty formulaic to me... their attempt to replicate
Alive... It's one of my least favorite songs on the album because of
that...
